The event took place on High Road shortly after 5 p.m. on Thursday, October 9. Police officers, along with paramedics, arrived at the scene to provide medical assistance to a teenager before transporting him to the hospital. It has been verified that his condition remains critical. No arrests have been made, but an investigation is underway.
Huseyin Kaylan, who has been the proprietor of New Southgate Food Centre on High Road since 2019, recounted the incident. He stated, “While I was in the store, I heard a gunshot and looked out the window to see the young man slowly approaching, bleeding. I pulled him inside to safety, applied pressure to his wound, and called the police and ambulance. I didn’t hesitate—helping is instinctive for me.”
At the time of the shooting, Huseyin was in the shop with another colleague. He mentioned that this wasn’t his first encounter with violence and the increasing presence of gangs in the vicinity. “This area is becoming more chaotic—my shop has been closed due to crime before,” he noted. “It seems like London is deteriorating overall, with young people witnessing violence everywhere, which is impacting them.”
A CCTV image of New Southgate Food Centre was captured after the teenager was taken to the hospital. The shop remained closed until the evening of October 10 for investigation purposes as part of the crime scene. The store has since been nominated for the National Lottery Retail Champions Award by a local resident, Alex Mankowitz, for the “exceptionally kind behavior” described in the nomination.
Detectives from the Met are seeking information to aid their investigation. Detective Sergeant Catherine Dempster expressed, “We understand the shock and concern this incident has caused the Arnos Grove community and are working swiftly to identify those responsible. Public assistance is crucial in this effort. Were you near High Road, Arnos Grove around 5 p.m.? Do you have any information about this incident?
