The Children’s Bookshop, located on Fortis Green Road in Muswell Hill, has been recognized with prestigious awards as the Children’s Bookseller of the Year and Best Book Retailer of the Year at the British Book Awards. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, the shop hosts book signings with renowned children’s authors such as Julia Donaldson, David Walliams, and Michael Rosen, drawing long queues of eager fans, as mentioned by the owner Sanchita Basu De Sarkar.

In addition to these accolades, The Children’s Bookshop actively contributes to the community by donating hundreds of books to charities, shelters, and refugee centers. They also engage in various initiatives including school outreach programs, World Book Day activities, book clubs, and a creative writing course. Sanchita emphasized that children’s books provide solace in today’s world and expressed gratitude for creating a safe sanctuary for children and their caregivers.

The awards ceremony, which took place at the Grosvenor Hotel and was attended by esteemed personalities like authors Jacqueline Wilson and Katherine Rundell, featured BBC presenters Lauren Laverne and CBBC presenter Rhys Stephenson as presenters. Notably, The Children’s Bookshop is only the second independent store to win the best retailer title in the past 11 years, applauded by judges for its commitment to supporting both established and emerging authors while prioritizing diversity and inclusion.

Organized by publishing trade magazine The Bookseller, The British Book Awards, known as The Nibbies, highlighted The Children’s Bookshop’s outstanding contributions beyond traditional book sales. The shop’s dedication to engaging readers of all abilities and backgrounds, along with its philanthropic efforts like book donations to various organizations and the development of a learning library for children with additional needs, set it apart in the industry.
